In the wake of the recent hull failures of certain sportboats-turned-commercial, let’s meet in the forum to discuss six-passenger boats and the Congressional loophole that allows them to exist.
I see by looking in the 2006 tide tables (I’ve got them in my laptop forever), as seen on the Chamber website http://homeralaska.org/tidetabl.htm , that 26, 27, and 28 of May, 11, 12, 13, and 14 of July, 9, 10, and 11 of August are a little hairy - I have to be in the right spot at the right time on those days. If I am on the right spot they will likely be our best days. Those big tides are more of a gamble but we always manage to make something work!
May is my favorite month because I’m more relaxed and havn’t been working hard for long. Weather is, by far, the biggest factor and sunny, pleasant days are most common in June and July. I recommend die-hard fishers come in May and fish two or three days, others come in early June and fish for one or two days. For most people, the number of tourists in Alaska in July detracts a little from the experience. August is a great big fish month but the most fickle weather - Maybe two days fishing - seperated by a week of sightseeing. September also has fickle weather but is the optimum time to catch a trophy. Charter captains reading this; “Oh, That’s how it works!”
I had never heard that slang before Eric… For regular maintenance, we’re going to be out of service until May First. A little gel-coat, a little polish, a more hydrodynamic rudder, should have that bait station finished this year, and then fish, fish, fish!
We’ve been field testing reels with more big-fish capability for the past decade. Five years ago, an Accurate 665 made it into our line-up. After all manners of abuse, that reel survived. Now, the Northern Lights has up to twenty of these and an ATD-6 two speed and hasn’t had a catastrophic failure! Two more ATD-6s are being shipped to complement. My ten year old, seventy five pound daughter reeled in a fish on one of these that could take a grown man using a conventional reel to his knees!
Trying to accomodate future programming, an Athlon processor is going under the dash to help the Centrino powered laptop. That’s a little like “helping” a Kia get down the quarter mile with a V-8 engine swap! Expect to see more monitors and fewer stand alone electronics in the future.
