Captain’s Notes

Welcome to the Captain’s Notes feature of the new Aurora Sportfishing website. I’m Mark Millspaugh, captain of The Northern Lights since 1984 and owner of Aurora Sportfishing, the first sportfishing company in Alaska.

Allow me to explain. To overcome the problems experienced with charter offices in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, ie., double booking, over/under booking, and impersonal and imperfect service, the team Northern Lights started it’s own service.

To distance us from the pack of “charters” ( a charter is a whole boat booking ), since we all do open party booking too, we borrowed the term “sportfishing” from its birthplace in California and officially became Aurora Sportfishing in 1989.

Aurora Charters started in Seward in 1991, capitalizing on our name - They’re not us! Another Aurora Sportfishing started in Ketchikan two years ago and they’re not us. There was no other business in Alaska with “sportfishing” in it’s name until 1992. We are the first, the original - don’t get confused! Remember, it’s www.aurorasportfishing.net !

With this foray into the online arena, we continue to not have the overhead and operational costs associated with an office and put even more effort into your trip!

It is our goal, with this innovative site by Boulder Medical Graphics, to be as informative and functional as possible. We’re trying to make business more personal by inviting you into the process and allowing me to devote more time and consideration to your queries, no matter your time zone!
